The talking heads drone on, interrupting Renee’s thoughts of Spring: budding trees, sunny warmth, outdoors, miles away from glowing screens. She reaches for the remote, clutched tightly in his bony hand.
“I’m still watching.” The brim of his Veteran’s cap is pulled low, over his eyes.
“It’s all lies, Dad,” Renee sighs, retracting her hand.
“Can’t look away, girl,” he warns, never adjusting his cap. Outside, icy rain pelts the window. Ten more days to Spring, Renee thinks, muting her own desires like any good daughter should.
